Is Dwayne Johnson Playing Shazam in the DC Cinematic Universe?
Dwayne Johnson confirmed long ago that he was going to be involved in the new DC Cinematic Universe. He was originally cast as Black Adam in a Shazam movie yet the movie didn't go anywhere. He was then rumored to be Lobo (think alien Rob Zombie) and then the Internet thought of every single character he could be ranging from the John Stewart Green Lantern to Doomsday. Now, Johnson has shed some light as to who he will be playing.
"I will say this. There's a character out there that we're going to announce very soon that I'm going to play, and I'll just say this... this character has the power of Superman, he can throw down. Just say the word. That's all I'm going to say."
This comment is filled with direct references to the character of Shazam (previously called Captain Marvel yet renamed). Shazam, in the comics, is a young boy named Billy Batson who is granted the power to turn into a man with super powers. His powers are rival to those of Superman's, stated in Johnson's comment, and Billy is able to turn into this man-god by uttering the word "Shazam!". Johnson says in his comment "Just say the word."
Everything Johnson says points directly to him playing Shazam. In the rumored DC movie line-up, a Shazam movie was the next film to be released after Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Johnson did say the announcement was coming soon (San Diego Comic Con?) so it would make sense. However, if Shazam was being adapted into a movie there would have to be some changes. The original backstory of a wizard granting Billy Batson his powers is a bit... ridiculous to say the least for the world Man of Steel established. And having a ten year old boy being Shazam also wouldn't work. Either, they will change the Billy Baxton character to be a teenager or a very young adult, or they will bypass that persona altogether and just have Shazam. For a change that drastic, most people would be outraged but for a character as less-known as Shazam, you could get away with it.
Let's say they didn't get rid of the Billy Baxton identity. If there is a kid named Billy that turns into Shazam, then Dwayne Johnson would only be on screen half of the time his character is on. I personally hope they get rid of the ten year old kid and just let the Rock do his thing.
What do you think? Do you like Dwayne Johnson's comments? Is he Shazam? Is he someone else? Should they change Shazam's origin? Leave your thoughts in the comments section.
