Weekly Box Office Round-Up: Apes. Together. Strong!

In this week's box office round-up, we're taking a look at how the box office handled the opening on the summer's latest blockbuster Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. I said I was unsure of how it would fare against the monster that is Transformers: Age of Extinction. Well, this week my prediction was off... by a lot. Let's take a look:

#1 Dawn of the Planet of the Apes- $72,611,427

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes took the lead this week on its opening weekend pulling in an impressive $73 million (read our review here). It's predecessor, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, took in $55 million its opening weekend, so the trajectory is without a doubt going up. I think it's safe to say Dawn will make a lot of money by the end and I think it will have legs in the box office, especially with the next big blockbuster not being until the beginning of August with the release of Guardians of the Galaxy

#2 Transformers: Age of Extinction- $16,302,415

The past two weeks Transformers: Age of Extinction has been ruling the box office, until this week when Dawn took over. I said that I wasn't sure whether Dawn could beat out Transformers but I sure was wrong since Dawn made roughly $53 million more than Transformers this week. At this point, Transformers is the highest grossing film of the year, and I doubt whether it will be knocked down from that throne anytime soon.

#3 Tammy- $12,555,151

For a smaller R-rated comedy, Tammy has been doing reasonably well at the box office, despite it's poor ratings (though Transformers proved you can have bad reviews and still earned money!) Melissa McCarthy has always had a strong fan base that are seeing her in her first solo outing.

#4 22 Jump Street- $6,501,558

For five consecutive weeks, 22 Jump Street has been in the top 5. This R-rated comedy has been ranking in the cash, disproving the stigma that R-rated movies don't make any money.

#5 How to Train Your Dragon 2- $6,073,372

Similar to 22 Jump Street, How to Train Your Dragon 2 has also been in theaters for five weeks and has also stayed in our top 5 the entire time, disproving the stigma that R-rated comedies don't make any money... oh wait, this isn't Game of Thrones! Never mind. Read our review here for How to Train Your Dragon 2, not Game of Thrones

The other release of this week was Boyhood which earned a total of $387,618, however it only opened in five theaters total. Just to run off our top five, at #1 was Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, at #2 was Transformers: Age of Extinction, at #3 was Tammy, at #4 was 22 Jump Street and at #5 was How to Train Your Dragon 2. Next week, the R-rated comedy Sex Tape opens along with the animated film Planes: Fire & Rescue and the horror/thriller The Purge: Anarchy. My guess is that Sex Tape will be the top if Dawn of the Planet of the Apes doesn't dominate a second week. Of course, I was way off about this week so take what I say with a grain of salt!
