Weekly Box Office Round-Up: Transformers at it again!
This week for films opening were the Melissa McCarthy led comedy Tammy. Also opening was the found footage E.T.-esque film Earth to Echo and the Eric Bana horror film Deliver Us from Evil. Let's take a look at what won the Box Office this week.
#1 Transformers: Age of Extinction- 36,400,000
For the second week in a row, Transformers: Age of Extinction is number one at the box office. Even though the general view of the movie is that it is terrible, the Transformers franchise just keeps making money, with the third film Transformers: Dark of the Moon in the prestigious billion-dollar club with The Avengers and Avatar. There was no doubt that this movie would make a ton of money and it has done nothing short of that. With nothing huge opening against it this week, there was little doubt it would be number one. Whether it can maintain number one next week against Dawn of the Planet of the Apes... I guess we'll have to wait and see.
#2 Tammy- 21,170,000
Melissa McCarthy has proven to be a big name in female comedy after starring in Bridesmaids. With her first solo movie out (not counting Identity Thief) she was guaranteed to make some money. It had little chance of beating out Transformers, but it did take second place.
#3 Deliver Us from Evil- 9,500,000
With the Hulk finally back in theaters, we get to see all the action... wait, sorry. My bad. Eric Bana leads this horror flick that has received decent reviews from critics. For a horror movie, it's intake this week was decent but it was expected to not make a ton of money with Transformers also in theaters. With some of the other bigger blockbuster movies coming out soon, it'll be interesting to see how it will continue to do at the Box Office.
#4 22 Jump Street- 9,400,000
For its fourth week at the Box Office, 22 Jump Street is still making money, disproving entirely the stigma that R-rated comedies did not make money at the Box Office. Granted it's sliding down the ranks a bit as the weeks go on, that is expected for a movie that has been out for so long. My guess is that by next week it won't even be on the top 5 and more and if it is, it'll be number five.
#5 How to Train Your Dragon 2- 8,750,000
Rounding out our top 5 this week is How to Train Your Dragon 2 which has also been in theaters for four weeks. As I said earlier for 22 Jump Street, it's great that after being in theaters for this long that it's still making money. My guess is it'll be off the top 5 next week. You can read our spoiler-free review of the movie here.
The other new release of this week, Earth to Echo was at number 6 but we only do top 5 so it wasn't listed. Just to reiterate the top 5, it's Transformers: Age of Extinction as #1, Tammy as #2, Deliver Us from Evil as #3, 22 Jump Street as #4 and How to Train Your Dragon 2 as #5. Next week, the new releases are Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Boyhood. Both films have been getting great critical praise. I think for number one it will come down to Apes and Transformers. I think Apes will be popular but I don't know if it will knock Transformers off its throne. I hope it will but I'm not sure. Tune in next week to see who dominates the Box Office.
