Weekly Box Office Round-Up: What a Bunch of A-Holes!

This week was a huge surprise at the Box Office, as you'll see later on in the article. Opening this week was the risky Marvel property Guardians of the Galaxy and the James Brown biopic Get on Up. Let's take a look at this past week's box office.

#1 Guardians of the Galaxy- $94,320,883

This was a huge surprise for everyone. Guardians of the Galaxy was a risky bet on Marvel's part. It was unknown. It was strange. It was different. It was tracked to make around $60-70 million but, as you can see, it far surpassed that, breaking August records making around $94 million. You can read our review for the movie here.

#2 Lucy- $18,252,590

There's not a lot of surprise that Lucy was high up on our top 5 this week. It was number one last week but, probably because of Guardians, it had a 58% drop from last week. Still, it's proving that people want to see female-led action films.

#3 Get on Up- $13,585,915

On it's first week, the James Brown biopic came in third place. It wasn't expected to make a lot of money though, considering it was opening against blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy. Still, for what it is, $14 million isn't terrible.

#4 Hercules- $11,010,367

For only being on its second week, Hercules isn't doing so well at the Box Office. Domestically, it's only grossed about $50 million, half of its budget. However, I don't think with the huge success that other films like Guardians and Lucy are getting, and with other big films still to come out, that Hercules has much of a future these next few weeks on our top 5 list. You can read our review here

#5 Dawn of the Planet of the Apes- $8,690,314

On it's fourth week, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is still strong at the Box Office. However, I don't think it will be on the top 5 list next week, though. I think it will continue to make money, but it's had its time on our list. You can read our review here.

Just to recap, our top 5 was Guardians of the Galaxy at #1, Lucy at #2, Get on Up at #3, Hercules at #4 and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes at #5. Next week, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Into the Storm are the big releases. I think Turtles will be number one with Guardians at number two but Guardians does have a very good chance at keep the top spot. Only time will tell.
