Weekly Box Office Round-Up: Equalizer = Success!
This week, the new releases were The Equalizer and The Boxtrolls. Let's take a look at this past week's box office:
#1 The Equalizer- $34,137,828
On its opening weekend, the Denzel Washington-led film The Equalizer took first place. While it has been getting mixed reviews, there was little doubt in my mind that the movie would take top spot this week, simply for the appeal of Denzel Washington brutally kicking some ass.
#2 The Maze Runner- $17,437,020
On its second week, The Maze Runner came in second place. Last week, the young adult book adaptation was in first place. I said this last week, but I think it'll have a few weeks in the top 5 before it drifts off.
#3 The Boxtrolls- $17,275,239
On its opening weekend, the stop-motion kids film The Boxtrolls came in third place. Being the only fresh kids film out now (until November's Big Hero 6), I think it will survive the top 5 for a little bit longer than people are expecting. We'll see, though.
#4 This is Where I Leave You- $6,894,340
On its second week at the box office, This is Where I Leave You came in fourth place. I said last week that I didn't think it had much of a future in our top 5 list and, being already at #4 on its second week, I think it will either be #5 or out of the top 5 next week.
#5 Dolphin Tale 2- $4,788,153
On its third week at the box office, Dolphin Tale 2 came in fifth place. With the release of a new kids film, The Boxtrolls, this week, it makes sense that it would take a bit of a dive (Get it? Get it? Cause they're dolphins? Ah forget it.). The film will most likely not be on our top 5 list next week.
To re-cap, #1 was The Equalizer, #2 was The Maze Runner, #3 was The Boxtrolls, #4 was This is Where I Leave You and #5 was Dolphin Tale 2.
Next week, the new releases are Gone Girl and Annabelle. I think Gone Girl will be #1 with Annabelle at #2.
