Weekly Box Office Round-Up: Maze Runner Races to the Top!
This week, the new films to open were The Maze Runner, A Walk Among the Tombstones and This is Where I Leave You. I predicted that The Maze Runner would be number one. Let's take a look at this past week's box office.
#1 The Maze Runner- $32,512,804
On its opening week, the Young Adult film The Maze Runner took top spot. These last few weeks have been slow box office-wise, so Maze Runner was pretty much guaranteed a top spot. Plus, Young Adult films have a history of being very profitable (The Hunger Games, Harry Potter). It probably won't dominate much longer and will most likely be out of the top 5 in the next few weeks.
#2 A Walk Among the Tombstones- $12,758,780
On its opening week, the Liam Neeson led film A Walk Among the Tombstone came in second place. It seems to be a trend this year that an unexpected film ranks higher than a famous actor-led film. It happened when Lucy took top spot over the Dwayne Johnson led film Hercules, and now it's happened with The Maze Runner and this movie. This marks the fourth Liam Neeson movie this year, and I doubt it has much of a future on the top 5 list. We'll have to wait and see though.
#3 This is Where I Leave You- $11,5557,149
This is Where I Leave You has a great cast: Jason Bateman, Tiny Fey, Adam Driver, Corey Stoll, Jane Fonda, Rose Byrne... this movie was guaranteed to make at least some money just from the cast alone. Even though it has that cast and it's come out in a year where most R-rated comedies are profitable, I don't think it will stay on the top 5 much longer. I know, pretty much every movie I'm saying doesn't have much of a future... but with Oscar season around the corner, these few movies that are coming out before the storm don't stand a chance.
#4 No Good Deed- $9,794,188
Last week, No Good Deed was top of the box office. This week, it has dropped to number four. It so far has grossed almost $40 million, which was more than what anyone expected this film to make. It just proves that the people like Idris Elba! It most likely will not be on next week's top 5.
#5 Dolphin Tale 2- $8,868,076
Last week's second place film, Dolphin Tale 2, is now #5 at the box office. It's making some money because it's really the only family-friendly movie out now. However, with The Boxtrolls just around the corner, it's going to be bumped out soon.
It should be noted that Guardians of the Galaxy, which has been dominating the box office since the first day of August, came in at #6 this week making over $5 million. To re-cap this week's box office, #1 was The Maze Runner, #2 was A Walk Among the Tombstones, #3 was This is Where I Leave You, #4 was No Good Deed and #5 was Dolphin Tale 2.
Next week, the Denzel Washington action movie The Equalizer and the stop-motion animated film The Boxtrolls come out. I think either could take the top spot, but I'll lean more towards The Equalizer.
