Weekly Box Office Round-Up: Mockingjay Wins the Game
This week, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 1 opened in theaters. Let's take a look at this past week's box office.
#1 The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 1- $121,897,634
On its opening weekend, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 1 came in first place. While I am not personally a fan of the series (or the young adult book/movie genre at all), there's no doubt that this movie had a fantastic opening. It apparently is behind the openings of the previous two films but that doesn't really matter. Mockingjay is going to stay in top 5 for a while and it's going to be one of the highest grossing films of the year.
#2 Big Hero 6- $20,124,166
On its third week, Big Hero 6 came in second place. It was almost tied with Mockingjay and... oh, wait. No. I was off by about $100 million dollars. My mistake. Despite being so far behind the first place contender, Big Hero 6 has been doing fantastic at the box office. It has a little while left in the top 5 before it is pushed out.
#3 Interstellar- $15,341,167
On its third week, Interstellar came in third place. Even though the film hasn't been making the money everyone thought it would make, it still has been doing pretty good. While its domestic box office isn't "stellar", it has been crushing it overseas, something that will be very beneficial to the movie. You can read our review for Interstellar here.
#4 Dumb and Dumber To- $14,076545
On its second week, Dumb and Dumber To came in fourth place. Despite taking first place last week, the sequel hasn't been doing all that well at the box office, most likely a result of its mediocre reviews and it being 20 years overdue. I think by next week it will be off the top 5 or at number five spot. We'll have to see.
#5 Gone Girl- $2,836,019
On its eighth week, Gone Girl came in fifth place. It's not often that we get to say that a movie has been in the top five for eight consecutive weeks. The movie has seen more success than I think anyone really predicted. However, I think it will be out of the top 5 next week. But who knows? It's held on this long. You can read our review for Gone Girl here.
To re-cap: #1 was The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 1, #2 was Big Hero 6, #3 was Interstellar, #4 was Dumb and Dumber To and #5 was Gone Girl.
Next week, Horrible Bosses 2 and The Penguins of Madagascar open in theaters. I think it will be a close race between the two for first place with Mockingjay in either second or third place.
