Weekly Box Office Round-Up: One Movie to Rule Them All
This week, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb and Annie all opened in theaters. Let's take a look at this past week's box office.
#1 The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies- $54,724,334
On its opening weekend, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies came in first place. This film actually opened on Wednesday, so it actually made close to $90 million dollars. This looks like a great set up for it to cross the $1 billion dollar mark. I think this film is going to have a big presence for the rest of the year and even carry into early 2015. You can read our review here.
#2 Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb- $17,100,520
On its opening weekend, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb came in second place. With two children's films opening on the same weekend, many expected that this would take the lead, mainly because it was the third movie in an already established franchise. While I think it'll make some money, I think we'll see it drift off the top 5 in the next few weeks.
#3 Annie- $15,861,939
(Finally, a movie with a short title!) On its opening weekend, Annie came in third place. As I said above, two children's films opened this weekend and Annie was just behind Night at the Museum by a couple million dollars. With bad reviews coming out, I don't think Annie will have much of a presence in the upcoming weeks. We'll have to wait and see.
#4 Exodus: Gods and Kings- $8,105,681
On its second week, Exodus: Gods and Kings came in fourth place. It was bound to happen. The film may have come in first place last week, it was going to go down a few notches with The Hobbit opening and their both being swords-and-sandals movies. I think that if not next week, the week after, Exodus will be off the top 5 list.
#5 The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 1- $8,105,681
On its fifth week, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 1 came in fifth place. The movie has been making a lot of money, but with newer releases such as Exodus and The Hobbit, the film has backed off a bit. However, there's no doubt it's going to end strong and be one of the highest grossing movies of the year. But I don't think it will be on the top 5 next week, and if it is, it will be #5.
To re-cap, #1 was The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, #2 was Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, #3 was Annie, #4 was Exodus: Gods and Kings and #5 was The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 1.
Next week, Unbroken, The Gambler, Into the Woods, Big Eyes and Selma open. I think The Hobbit will take first place again with either Unbroken or Into the Woods in second.
