Neill Blomkamp Will Direct an Alien Movie
Neill Blomkamp is a very interesting director. He made his directorial debut with District 9, which I thought was a fantastic film. He then did Elysium, which I thought was good, but on the same level as its predecessor at all. Next month, his third film, Chappie comes out, which looks like it could be really good. If this movie isn't good either, then my faith in Blomkamp as a director is shaken a bit, but I have a good feeling that Chappie could be something special. And now I'm really hoping, because Blomkamp has now confirmed that the movie he'll be working on next is an Alien film.
On his Instagram, Blomkamp posted a drawing of the Xenomorph design, saying "I think it's officially my next film." (You can see it here). Alien is a franchise that I absolutely love, well, the first two anyways. I would be very interested in seeing what Blomkamp would do with an Alien movie, as gritty, gory sci fi is his wheelhouse. For those of you who didn't know, Blomkamp posted on Instagram several hand-drawn sketches of his idea for another Alien film, called "Alien: Xeno". We didn't report on it because I thought it was just fan drawings from a director. But now it seems that his public displaying of these images and his script that he had has gotten him the job. Here are the images he posted, if you did not get a chance to see them prior.
I think the concept art looks awesome. It gives little detail as to what Blomkamp's script may hold in store for us, but it really pays homage to what Ridley Scott introduced in the original Alien, while also giving us a fresh interpretation. I am very interested to see what Blomkamp does with this type of movie, but my level of excitement hinges on how good Chappie is.
What do you think? Do you like Neill Blomkamp as a director? Did you like District 9 or Elysium? Are you looking forward to Chappie? Is he a good fit for an Alien movie? Do you like the concept art? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.
