Weekly Box Office Round-Up: Who Lives in a Pineapple Under the Sea?
This weekend, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, Seventh Son and Jupiter Ascending opened in theaters. Let's take a look at this past week's box office.
#1 The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water- $56,000,000
On its opening weekend, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water came in first place. For the past three weeks, American Sniper has been number one, but this week was dethroned. SpongeBob is a very popular franchise, so there was little doubt this film would make money. I just didn't anticipate it would be number one. I think it will stick around for a little while longer on the top 5 list.
#2 American Sniper- $24,156,000
On its fourth week of wide release, American Sniper came in second place. Like I said before, this movie was the reigning champion of the box office for three weeks in a row. Even though it was bumped out by SpongeBob, the film still made good money, making it one of the biggest fourth week profits of all time. It's incredible how much money it's making, and I think it will be around for a little while longer too. You can read our review here.
#3 Jupiter Ascending- $19,000,000
On its opening weekend, Jupiter Ascending came in third place. This is a very disappointing opening for the studio. The film had a $176 million dollar budget and to open to a number eight times smaller... just don't expect the Wachowskis to get the chance to make a big budgeted film any time soon. I don't think this film has much of a future on the top 5 list.
#4 Seventh Son- $7,101,000
On its opening weekend, Seventh Son came in fourth place. A lot of people were hoping this would be a good fantasy film, but I think we all knew it wasn't going to be. This movie has been getting nothing but bad reviews and its box office figures are representative of the disinterest surrounding the film. I think it will be number five on the top 5 list next week, if not off the list entirely.
#5 Paddington- $5,365,000
On its fourth week, Paddington came in fifth place. It was quite a drop from last week, considering it was number two. But the profit it made dropped only a little, about $3 million. It just shows how lackluster last week was for the box office. This film is still making money and rightfully so, from its fantastic reviews, from both critics and fans. Talks of a sequel have already gone around from its profit. However, I think it will be off the list next week. It's nothing against the film; it's already had four great weeks. We're just starting to get some newer releases that will most likely bump it off.
To re-cap, #1 was The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, #2 was American Sniper, #3 was Jupiter Ascending, #4 was Seventh Son and #5 was Paddington.
Next week, Kingsman: The Secret Service and Fifty Shades of Grey open in theaters. I think the latter will be number one, with the former in second and either American Sniper or SpongeBob in third.
