Weekly Box Office Round-Up: Chappie Comes to Life
This weekend, Chappie, Unfinished Business and The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel opened in theaters. Let's take a look at this weekend's box office.
#1 Chappie- $13,300,000
On its opening weekend, Chappie came in first place. Even though it came in first, $13 million opening for an almost $50 million dollar film is not good at all. The film has been getting really poor reviews and I guess not a lot of people wanted to go see it. I was wanting to see it, but I decided to hold off because of the bad reviews and just see it on VOD. This makes me a little bit worried about Neill Blomkamp's Alien film now.
#2 Focus- $10,020,000
On its second week, Focus came in second place. So far, it has grossed only about $34 million domestically on a $50 million dollar budget. I think this weekend proves that the first few months of the year are very slow at the box office and not a lot of films make much money. Although, if studios made good films in these first few months, then they would make some money.
#3 The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel- $8,600,000
On its opening weekend, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel came in third place. For a film of this nature, I didn't really expect it to be in the top 5, let alone at number three. This was the only movie that came out this weekend that actually got good reviews, and even then they weren't stellar. I just want a really good movie to come out soon because I'm tired of staying at home week after week.
#4 Kingsman: The Secret Service- $8,300,000
On its fourth week, Kingsman: The Secret Service came in fourth place. This an example of what happens when you put out a good film in the first few months of the year. Over the past four weeks, this movie has been staying in the top 5, earning a decent amount of money each week. I cannot recommend it enough for action fans. You can read our review here.
#5 The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water- $7,000,000
On its fifth week, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water came in fifth place. How much longer is this movie going to be in the top 5? Seriously! I'm so sick of writing that title over and over again. Well, at least something is making money these days. It's made almost $150 million domestically. Good for it!
It should be noted that Unfinished Business opened this weekend as well, but it came in tenth place making only $4.8 million, which is one of the weakest openings for Vince Vaughn ever.
To re-cap, #1 was Chappie, #2 was Focus, #3 was The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, #4 was Kingsman: The Secret Service and #5 was The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.
Next week, the live action Disney film Cinderella, the Liam Neeson/Ed Harris action film Run All Night and the Adam Sandler film The Cobbler open in theaters. I think Cinderella will take first place.
