Weekly Box Office Round-Up: Insurgent Leads a Revolution
This weekend, The Divergent Series: Insurgent and The Gunman opened in theaters. Let's take a look at this past weekend's box office.
#1 The Divergent Series: Insurgent- $52,263,680
On its opening weekend, The Divergent Series: Insurgent came in first place. This was a no-brainer. This is the second installment in a popular young adult film series. The first one made a good amount of money, so there was no surprise that this took first place this week. However, similar to Fifty Shades of Grey, I think the bad reviews will catch up with it and it won't be nearly as profitable in the weeks to come. We will have to wait and see.
#2 Cinderella- $34,967,659
On its second week, Cinderella came in second place. Similar to the first place spot, it didn't surprise me that this film was still high ranking in its second week. Disney movies make a lot of money, and with the recognizable brand name, it was sure to still have a large presence. I wouldn't be shocked if it was stayed in the higher end of the top 5 list for a few more weeks.
#3 Run All Night- $5,032,323
On its second week, Run All Night came in third place. The movie has been making some money, but nearly enough. It needs to make a hell of a lot more to let the studio make even somewhat of a profit. That's sad, because I really liked this film. I thought it was really good, and I think it deserves to make more money than it is. If you like thrillers and if you like action, go see Run All Night. You can read our review of it here.
#4 The Gunman- $5,028,702
On its opening weekend, The Gunman came in fourth place. I was really looking forward to seeing this movie. I thought it looked like a cool action film and I thought the trailer was really good. Then bad review after bad review poured in until it was pretty clear this wasn't going to be an enjoyable movie. Not even Sean Penn's muscles could save this movie, unfortunately.
#5 Kingsman: The Secret Service- $4,627,340
On its sixth week, Kingsman: The Secret Service came in fifth place. This film has refused to back down for six whole weeks. For all those weeks it has stayed in the top 5, proving that positive word-of-mouth can do wonders for a movie. I loved Kingsman and thought it was great. If you want to see a full out ridiculous action movie, make sure you check this one out. You can read our review of it here.
To re-cap: #1 was The Divergent Series: Insurgent, #2 was Cinderella, #3 was Run All Night, #4 was The Gunman and #5 was Kingsman: The Secret Service.
Next week, the Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart R-rated comedy Get Hard and the Rihana and Jim Parsons animated kids film Home open in theaters. I think Insurgent may take it again for first place, though.
