Weekly Box Office Round-Up: Taking the Focus Away from Fifty Shades
This weekend, Focus and The Lazarus Effect opened in theaters. Let's take a look at this weekend's box office.
#1 Focus- $19,100,000
On its opening weekend, Focus came in first place. I did not expect this to overtake Fifty Shades of Grey, which has been dominating (haha, get it?) the box office for the past couple weeks. But, it did. However, it looks as if it was kind of a slow weekend anyways. I think it will be lower down on the list next week.
#2 Kingsman: The Secret Service- $11,750,000
On its third week, Kingsman: The Secret Serivce came in second place. For the past couple weeks, this film has been stuck behind Fifty Shades but now has overtaken it. This is a movie that deserves every dollar it makes. I can't recommend it enough. And I hope it makes enough to warrant a sequel. It seems like it's doing pretty well for itself right now. You can read our review of it here.
#3 The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water- $11,200,000
On its fourth week, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water came in third place. This film has been crushing it at the box office, staying high up in the top 5 consistently. It proves that animated kids movies have a lot of power when they're the only ones in the market at the time. It will most likely stay in the top 5 list next week.
#4 Fifty Shades of Grey- $10,927,000
On its third week, Fifty Shades of Grey came in fourth place. The past two weeks, Fifty Shades has been number one at the box office, and making a ton of money. However, it's been dropping significantly since its opening weekend, to the point now where it's in fourth. I wouldn't be surprised if it was off the top 5 list next week, or at the very least, number five.
#5 The Lazarus Effect- $10,600,000
On its opening weekend, The Lazarus Effect came in fifth place. Right now it's the only horror film in the market, which makes sense why it would be in the top 5. But the reviews haven't been stellar. I think by next week, it will be out of the top 5. It was definitely boosted by the inclusion of Olivia Wilde, but it won't save it.
To re-cap, #1 was Focus, #2 was Kingsman: The Secret Service, #3 was The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, #4 was Fifty Shades of Grey and #5 was The Lazarus Effect.
Next week, the Neill Blomkamp sci-fi film Chappie and the Vince Vaughn comedy Unfinished Business open in theaters. I think Chappie will take first place.
