Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens or Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice- Which Was the Better Trailer?

Yesterday was a fantastic day to be a film nerd. Trailers came out for two of the most highly anticipated films of the next couple years- Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. In this article, we're going to talk about both trailers and then I'll say which one is my personal favorite. Keep in mind, I thought both were fantastic trailers!

Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

This is the second trailer to be released for this movie, which you can watch here. While I thought the first trailer was good, this one blew it away! We got a lot more meat in this trailer. We saw a lot more from the characters and the battles. I've said this before, especially in our analysis/breakdown of the trailer (which you can read here), this trailer perfectly captured the tone of what Star Wars is. From how every visually looked to the music by John Williams, it was Star Wars. It wasn't just some sci fi movie with the Star Wars title, but it was actually Star Wars. That is incredibly hard to recreate, and from the looks of this trailer, J.J. Abrams did a flawless job of doing it.

However, I would have liked to have seen more from the original trilogy cast. When reports of a second trailer came out a while ago, it said that this one would focus more on the returning cast, like how the first trailer focused on the new cast. This trailer still had a lot of the new cast and only showed Harrison Ford as Han Solo abd Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca. We saw what appears to be Mark Hamill's Luke, but it was only his hand. I wish we could have seen Hamill face on, and maybe Carrie Fisher as Leia. I also wish this trailer gave us a little bit more of the plot instead of just showing us a bunch of images like last time. But regardless of my little problems, this trailer is awesome.

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice

This is a trailer that has been rumored for the past year to be coming out with every big blockbuster movie. Well it has finally come out and it is awesome (you can watch it here). It immediately shows that this is not Marvel. We're not getting jokes and a light-hearted tone (with no diss to Marvel). This is going to be dark and brooding. While a lot of people have problems with that, I love it. I think it's a great way to differentiate itself from Marvel, and I also think it works with for a post-Dark Knight Trilogy era of comic book movies. The cinematography in this trailer is beautiful, which you can see more clearly in our analysis/breakdown here. Visually, it looks fantastic. It looks grounded and gritty like director Zack Snyder has said it will be, but the designs are perfect. The Batsuit looks awesome. A lot of people were initially against Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman, but I think he's going to be great. This trailer didn't show a ton of him, but from what we saw, he could be our best Batman yet.

The trailer also delves a bit into the psychology of the world after an alien god has descended upon the earth and has torn apart half of one of the world's biggest cities in Metropolis. Some people think he's the Messiah. Others think he's an all-powerful being who has no checks or balances. I think the showing of this mentalities lends itself to the belief that there may be a deeper level to this movie, which was one of my favorite parts of Man of Steel. How would the world react if this type of thing had actually happened, and I think this trailer captured that perfectly. Also, this trailer had some fantastic dialogue in it, which was lacking in the Star Wars trailer (except, of course, "Chewey, we're home").

So which had the better trailer? From a technical aspect, it has to be Batman v. Superman. The cinematography is beautiful. The use of voice-overs illustrates a clear image. The color scheme of the trailer is perfect in setting up the tone. However, for the more exciting trailer, it has to be Star Wars. It gave you everything that reminded you of what Star Wars is. The music was perfect, the visuals were spectacular. It's like they filmed these back with the original trilogy, but it's more crisp and clear. I get more excited watching the Star Wars trailer than Batman v. Superman. But which do I like more? This is a close one. Very close. I'm going to give the upperhand to Batman v. Superman. I am not a die-hard Star Wars fanboy. I love the original trilogy and I love the world of Star Wars. If I was a die-hard fanboy, then I would probably like that more, but I'm more of a comic book/superhero fan. For that, I like the Batman v. Superman trailer a hair more, but both are awesome, fantastic trailers.
