First Trailer for Star Trek Beyond

Despite mixed feelings from fans, I have rather liked the past two rebooted Star Trek films. J.J. Abrams brought an energy and liveliness to the films by injecting more action and excitement into the franchise. However, the films managed to keep a balance of fun action and adventure, while also sticking to the main roots of Star Trek, which is exploration and true science fiction. It felt like Star Trek, but with a new twist and spin on it for a modern audience. Many hardcore Trekkies didn't care for the previous films, but I thought they were well done. So when Abrams left the franchise to do Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, they brought on Furious 6 director Justin Lin to direct. This made me a bit nervous, because I was afraid that this meant they were going for the same over-the-top, ridiculous action style of the Fast and the Furious movies, but I still had faith. And now we have our first trailer for the latest film, Star Trek Beyond.

I did not like this trailer. It was a perfect mix of Guardians of the Galaxy and Fast and the Furious, both of which is not Star Trek. The song is what really pushed it over the edge into being ridiculous. Slow motion explosions, high octane jumps... These are things that don't really fit into the universe of Star Trek. Unfortunately, this movie chose to focus on those aspects entirely. Maybe the film itself will be more balanced, but this trailer chose to go straight into the deep end, and I'm sure this will outrage hardcore Trekkies. This trailer would have been fine if it was some new, original sci-fi film. I probably would have said "It looks a bit cheesy and over-the-top, but it looks cool." But the Star Trek title doesn't fit with this trailer. It just doesn't. So with action director Justin Lin helming it, and comedy writer Simon Pegg scripting, it feels like this film is focusing on the wrong aspects of what made Abrams' Star Trek films so good.
