First Trailer for The Fate of the Furious

The Fast and the Furious franchise has turned from a lackluster series about street racing to a bombastic action franchise, and it's honestly for the better. Ever since Fast Five brought on Dwayne Johnson, the films have been incredible. Are they stupid? Yes, but they are just so much damn fun! Furious 7 was especially good to watch. Not only did it deliver on the insane stunts and crazy action we came to see, but it gave us a really touching tribute to the passed Paul Walker. So I've been very excited to see the next film, which has since been named The Fate of the Furious. I'm surprised they didn't spell Fate as "F8". It would've been stupid, but it would've fit the franchise. Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray was brought on the helm the eighth installment, and that was an exciting move. Straight Outta Compton was fantastic, and a lot of props have to go to Gray for his excellent directing. So having someone of his caliber take over the franchise was great to hear. And with the film's eminent release next summer, we now we have our first trailer for the movie.

I'm mixed on this trailer, and I'm underwhelmed. The spectacle is all there. They go for it once again with the stunts and action, and that was good to see. Each film I ask myself how they're going to top what they just did, and they keeping finding a way. The prison escape scene looks phenomenal, and I have a feeling that will be the best scene of the movie. Anytime the Rock gets time to shine is a good use of screen time in my book. It was also good to see the comradery and the dynamic between everyone back and at its height. The back-and-forth between everyone helps propel this franchise. But what I'm really worried about is this storyline of Dom (Vin Diesel) turning on everyone and joining the film's villain, Cipher (Charlize Theron). I really hope that it's not mind control. This trailer really paints it as that, and that would be incredibly cheap and cliched. If they find some other truly compelling reason for Dom to turn on his family, then I'm all in. But if Cipher is controlling his mind, then I'm really nervous about this movie. Like I said, it's cheap and overused, and I don't this movie to feel that way. I want it to be exciting and innovating. It's one trailer and another one down the line could elaborate more, but as it stands right now, I'm less excited about this movie now than I was before the trailer.
