The Movie Paradise Nerd Round-Up: January 21st

Welcome to this week's The Movie Paradise Nerd Round-Up. Essentially what we do here is we take a look at all things nerdy. We break down everything in the world of nerdom, ranging from superheroes to Star Wars and every other geeky thing in between, and analyse the smaller bits of news that weren't big enough stories to necessarily warrant an entire article, but are still significant and important. Perhaps it's casting news, a contract detail, a set image, or something else that's more on the minor side, but is definitely worth checking out. Then we have a little bit of fun with some movie-related videos and clips. It's a time and place for all of us unabashed nerds to come together and talk about the things that we love so much. So, without further ado, let's get started with this week's Nerd Round-Up.

The News

While Dwayne Johnson has been locked in to play the anti-hero Black Adam in the upcoming Shazam movie for some time now, we have heard practically nothing of the actual development of the project. Johnson was announced so early on, even before the actor playing Shazam was revealed (who has still yet to be cast), that many assumed he would appear in the DC Cinematic Universe prior to the Shazam movie. While him popping up in a Justice League film or something along those lines aren't known, we do have confirmation that Johnson will star in a Black Adam spin-off film, that will be separate from the Shazam movie. This is really interesting to hear. First of all, it dispels rumors that the characters of Black Adam and Shazam will be one and the same. Second, it gives Johnson more time to shine in the DC Universe, which is a major plus. Third, it proves they have larger plans for the Black Adam character, outside of him just being Shazam's villain. We don't know much about the film yet, and I'm not exactly sure how they'll turn it into a full length film, but I'm interested as long as the Rock is attached.

The biggest piece of news about Deadpool 2 that we still don't know about is who will be playing Cable. Many actors have been rumored over the past several months, but we haven't had anything that has been official. However, it now may have been revealed who will be playing the character. On both Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman's Instagram accounts, pictures were uploaded of the two of them sitting with former James Bond actor, Pierce Brosnan. While we don't know anything for certain, many have interpreted these images to mean that not only will Brosnan be playing Cable, but that Jackman will don the claws again to play Wolverine in Deadpool 2. I don't know if that's actually the case, but I hope it is. Brosnan would be a fine Cable, though I have a few other actors I'd rather see take on the role. But seeing Jackman in Deadpool 2 would be fascinating. Since he and Reynolds are good buddies in real life, fans have wanted to see the two characters crossover. So if Jackman will actual reprise his role again in Deadpool 2, then I think it would make for an incredible film!

After the post-credits scene of X-Men: Apocalypse teased Nathaniel Essex, the alter ego to the comic book villain Mister Sinister, Fox seemed to confirm that the baddie would be the antagonist of Logan. However, now that seems to no longer be the case. Director James Mangold talked about the film's villain after the release of the latest trailer (which you can see here), and stated that there won't be a definitive big bad, since this is a more grounded film. He even went out of his way to say that specifically Mister Sinister would not be in the movie. Part of me is relieved. I think Logan is going to be its own thing, and I don't want it bogged down by a shoehorned-in villain, like what happened at the end of The Wolverine. I've heard speculation about this, and now with this news it actually makes sense. Maybe Pierce Brosnan isn't playing Cable, but is rather playing Mister Sinister in Deadpool 2? Since we now know Sinister definitely won't be in Logan, this now becomes a very interesting possibility. I don't know how likely it is, but it's a little bit relieving knowing that this villain won't be in Logan
