The Movie Paradise Nerd Round-Up: February 4th

Welcome to this week's The Movie Paradise Nerd Round-Up. Essentially what we do here is we take a look at all things nerdy. We break down everything in the world of nerdom, ranging from superheroes to Star Wars and every other geeky thing in between, and analyse the smaller bits of news that weren't big enough stories to necessarily warrant an entire article, but are still significant and important. Perhaps it's casting news, a contract detail, a set image, or something else that's more on the minor side, but is definitely worth checking out. Then we have a little bit of fun with some movie-related videos and clips. It's a time and place for all of us unabashed nerds to come together and talk about the things that we love so much. So, without further ado, let's get started with this week's Nerd Round-Up.

The News

Though it seems like DC is a mess right now between Ben Affleck leaving The Batman and their other films getting multiple re-writes, Aquaman has seemingly been going on without a hitch. With James Wan set to direct and Jason Momoa starring, it's seemingly going fine. And now we have a few more additions to the cast. Nicole Kidman will play Momoa's mother, Atlanta, Temuera Morrison will be the father, and Yahya Abdul-Manteen II will play the villainous Black Manta. The only actor here I really know is Kidman, who just earned herself an Oscar nomination for her role in Lion. She's a fantastic actress, and I think she'll definitely elevate the film. As for the other actors, I'm just glad the roles have been cast. I wasn't sure if Black Manta was going to be in this movie, since Patrick Wilson is playing Ocean Master. So I'm glad to see that he's making the cut. I'm just hoping that we won't have any major upsets or controversies surrounding this film. I don't want to hear in a week that Wan is leaving, or that it's getting a last minute re-write. I have a lot of faith in Aquaman, and it's one of the few DC projects left that I'm excited for.

Recently Oscar nominated director, Denis Villeneuve, has been tapped to direct the upcoming Dune remake. I personally am not very familiar with Dune. I haven't read the books nor watched the film, so I don't know a lot about the property. What catches my eye is Villeneuve. While I wasn't a huge fan of Arrival, I loved his work on Prisoners. I think he's an excellent director, and a very capable storyteller. I'm just excited to see him get work. I'm hopeful for Blade Runner 2049 this year. I'm not big into the original Blade Runner, but I'm excited to see Villeneuve's take on it. We saw a bit of it in Arrival, but he's really fully immersing himself into science fiction with Blade Runner, and even more so with Dune. At this point, I'm excited for any new Villeneuve project, regardless if I know what it is or not. So even though I know practically nothing about Dune, I'm very interested to see what he does with it.

As we get closer and closer to the release of Logan (just over a month left!), more and more bits and pieces are coming out. We still know very little about the actual plot, which is incredible actually for a comic book movie these days. But instead we're getting a sense of the feel of the film, rather than having the whole movie spoiled for us. And now we know the official runtime of the movie. Logan will be 135 minutes long, which is two hours and fifteen minutes. This is a good length for Logan. If it was an hour and twenty minutes, I would've been concerned. But I also would've been a bit apprehensive if it was pushing three hours. This is a nice, lean runtime that will give it plenty of time to explore the story in full. At this point, I just want to see the f*cking movie! I'm done with all the stills and quotes and all the bullsh*t. I just want to finally see Logan, and experience it! I think this could be one of the best comic book movies to date, and by far the best Wolverine tale depicted on screen. I have a lot of faith and anticipation for this film, and I can't wait to see it.
