Suicide Squad 2- Director Shortlist Includes Mel Gibson
For those who read this site more often than not, it's no surprise that I wasn't the biggest fan of Suicide Squad. I will go so far as to say that I hate the movie. I find very little redeemable about it. It ended up making my Worst Movies of 2016 list, which you can check out here. However, despite its shortcomings, the movie did incredibly well at the box office. Worldwide, Suicide Squad pulled in over $745 million dollars. That is an impressive feat, and I give full props to Warner Bros. and DC for their success. But that doesn't change the fact that the movie is utter sh*t. I'm just calling it as it is; the film was a complete mess. I don't blame director David Ayer for it. I think he had a vision for the movie that he was not able to fulfill, and I think he worked his ass off on this film. However, due to the poor critical reception of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, DC felt like they were under pressure to change Suicide Squad in the editing bay, and it resulted in a clusterf*ck of a motion picture. So I don't hold Ayer responsible for that. But with my hate for the movie, I have very little interest in seeing a sequel. I knew it was bound to happen, due to its box office success, but I wasn't necessarily looking forward to it. Amidst everything happening with The Batman (which you can read about here), as well as their other properties, DC has seemingly fast-tracked Suicide Squad 2, with a rather interesting director shortlist.
Reports are saying that directors Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies) are on the list, along with Mel Gibson, who is up for an Academy Award this year for his work on Hacksaw Ridge.
Just to get this part out of the way, I have not seen Zombieland, so I can't really comment on Fleischer as a director. With Levine, I did see The Night Before, but I'm not sure if that's the best litmus test for whether or not he would be good for a Suicide Squad 2. Regardless, these are the kind of names I would expected to be thrown around for this kind of film. The big one however, and the most talked about one, is Mel Gibson. Just last month, Gibson made all the headlines for calling Batman v. Superman "a piece of sh*t", and DC must've taken that as a complement. I posted this on Twitter, but I'll say it again: Warner Bros. wanting Mel Gibson to direct Suicide Squad 2 is like Universal wanting Steven Spielberg to direct the next Fifty Shades of Grey movie. You can ask all you want, but that doesn't mean it's going to happen. Gibson has been on record for saying that he does not like comic book movies, so I have no idea why he would ever consider doing this one. I can't blame Warner Bros. for wanting Gibson to direct, just as I can't blame Universal for thinking "It would be fantastic if Spielberg directed Fifty Shades Freed". But just because they want him don't mean sh*t. I also don't see this as a particularly smart move for Gibson. He's finally back in the game after being marginalized for ten years over his anti-Semitic and sexist remarks. He fully deserved what he got, but with Hacksaw Ridge, he proved that he was served his time and now he's back. So he goes and does Suicide Squad 2? If Gibson were to direct any comic book movie, I think he would want to do something he could build from the ground-up, not hop into a franchise on its second film.
I think this story is just further proof that DC doesn't have any idea what the f*ck they're doing. Suicide Squad 2 is the last film they should be thinking of right now. They should be focusing on getting The Batman and The Flash right, and getting a Man of Steel 2 made. There should honestly be a Man of Steel 2 long before a Suicide Squad 2. I get that Suicide Squad was surprising with its box office intake, but this shows just how reactionary DC actually is. They're running around like a chicken with its head cut off, going in all different directions. They're like: we want to do Green Lantern Corps! We want to do Cybrog! Wait, Suicide Squad made money? Let's do Suicide Squad 2 and a Harley Quinn spin-off! Forget the whole Mel Gibson part of this story, I don't want DC to make Suicide Squad 2 until they've got their sh*t figured out. Get The Batman straightened out. Get The Flash settled. Give me a few good movies in a row and get into your groove. Then you can get started on Suicide Squad 2. Look, it's possible that tomorrow we'll hear that Suicide Squad 2 will have a 2019 release date, with Mel Gibson directing. I think it's incredibly unlikely, but it's still possible. I will be interested to see what drew Gibson to this, but I will still think it's a wrong decision for DC to make this film with the rest of their universe (and the more important components of it) stuck in development hell. If it ends up going in this direction, DC will have my attention, but I will never say this wasn't a mistake on their part.
What do you think? Do you want to see Suicide Squad 2? Could Mel Gibson actually direct it? Would you rather see Ruben Fleischer or Jonathan Levine direct? Did you even like the original Suicide Squad? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.
