Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi- Vanity Fair Images Reveal First Look at New Characters

When the first teaser trailer dropped for Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, I wasn't a big fan of it. It didn't really show us anything new or memorable. It was simply a montage of shots that easily could have been from Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Other than the brief shot of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), there was nothing about the teaser that uniquely pertained to The Last Jedi. But my dislike for the teaser did nothing to hamper my overall excitement for the movie. I think it's going to be incredible, and I can't wait to see director Rian Johnson's vision realized on screen. The Force Awakens was really good, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was even better! So, at this rate, The Last Jedi should be incredible! Right? Well, I don't want to get too ahead of myself, but I am very excited for the movie. But since the teaser trailer dropped, I've been waiting for something new to really get me excited for the movie. And now we have it!

In the recent issue of Vanity Fair, a whole slew of new images for The Last Jedi have been released, including the first look at some of the new characters. You can see all of the images below:

and Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie)

There's a lot to unpack here. First of all, all the returning characters look great. The villains look awesome. The heroes look incredible. Everything looks great. I love the late Carrie Fisher's new costume design for Leia, and the image of her and Mark Hamill is heartbreaking. I think The Last Jedi is going to honor her in the best way possible. I also love the new characters. This is our first look at Laura Dern and Benicio del Toro. We've speculated before that Dern would be playing a politician, and while the title "Vice Admiral" sounds more military than political, her costume looks does look more like that of a politician's. So the jury's out on exactly what she will be in the film. I'm not exactly blown away by del Toro's costume. For the villain of the movie (or supposed villain), he doesn't really stand out. I also don't like his name, DJ. Granted, I didn't like the name "Finn" at first either, but it made sense within the context of the film. So maybe DJ, and his costume, will work once we see the movie. We'll have to wait and see. I absolutely love Luke's new look. It's badass and fantastic, and it's exactly how Luke should be looking at this point in his life. The images involving him and Rey look great, and I can't wait to see their chemistry in the movie. Overall, these are awesome images, and get me far more excited for The Last Jedi than the teaser trailer did.

What do you think? Do you like the Vanity Fair images? What do you think of the looks of the returning characters? What about the new ones? Which one is your favorite? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.
