SDCC 2017: Michelle Pfeiffer and Laurence Fisburne Cast in Ant-Man and the Wasp

While everyone's focus going into Marvel's Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic Con this weekend was on Thor: Ragnarok (you can see the new trailer here), Black Panther, and Avengers: Infinity War, expectations for Ant-Man and the Wasp news seemed to be low. Even though the film comes out right after Infinity War, just a year away from now, it is still relatively under the radar. I rather enjoyed the first Ant-Man. I didn't think it was a fantastic movie, but it was certainly better than it could've been. Marvel did an excellent job of taking a character who could have come across as utterly ridiculous, and spinning him in a way so that you can buy into his character. They made light of some of the more campy elements of the character, which is the complete opposite approach DC took to reinventing Aquaman, which was to simply make him the antithesis of what people had come to understand the character to be. Casting Paul Rudd was a stroke of genius. It allowed for some great moments of comedy, further selling the movie. But I thought Ant-Man was at his best in Captain America: Civil War, when we got a glimpse of him as Giant-Man. With the sequel, we were promised we'd get Evangeline Lily as the Wasp. It was teased in the first film that the original Ant-Man's (Michael Douglas) wife had been the first Wasp, but was lost in the microverse. So it seemed like the return of Janet van Dyne was a strong possibility. And, at Comic Con this year, we learned just who would be playing Janet.

It was announced that Michelle Pfeiffer will be playing Janet van Dyne in the movie. It was also announced that Laurence Fishburne will be playing Dr. Bill Foster, or Goliath. What immediately stands out is that these are two DC castings. Pfeiffer played Catwoman in Batman Returns, and Fishburne plays Perry White in the DC Cinematic Universe. That's not really important as much as it is interesting. I love the casting of Pfeiffer. She is an excellent actress, and I think she'll bring a lot to the film. She is A-list talent, and you needed an A-lister to act opposite Michael Douglas in this movie. I think their chemistry will be fantastic, and I think Pfeiffer is a great addition to this universe. I like the casting of Fishburne as well, because I'm such a fan of him as an actor. He'll always be Morpheus from The Matrix for me, but he is great in the supporting roles he has. He's good as Perry White in the DC movies, and even knocked his appearance in John Wick: Chapter Two out of the park earlier this year. What catches my eye about his casting is actually who he's playing. He's listed as playing Goliath, who is another size-shifter in the Marvel comics. So we have an original Ant-Man in Douglas' Hank Pym. We have an original Wasp in Pfeiffer's Janet van Dyne. Now we have an original Goliath. I think Fishburne's casting is key to them filling out an "original Avengers" from the 1960's and 70's. I think, in Ant-Man and the Wasp, we'll learn that there was a version of the Avengers before Captain America and Iron Man, and Fishburne's character is the key to that. Overall, I love the casting of Michelle Pfeiffer and Laurence Fishburne, and I can't wait to see them in the movie.

What do you think? Do you like the casting of Michelle Pfeiffer as Janet van Dyne? What about Laurence Fishburne as Bill Foster/Goliath? Are you looking forward to seeing Ant-Man and the Wasp? Were you happy with San Diego Comic Con this year? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.
