Nerd Round-Up: Star Wars Episode IX, John Wick 3, Hobbs and Shaw

Welcome to this week's Nerd Round-Up. Essentially what we do here is we take a look at all things circulating in the world of nerdom. We break down these down, anything ranging from superheroes to Star Wars, and every other geek-centric thing in between. We analyze the smaller bits of news that weren't big enough stories to necessarily warrant an entire article, but are still significant and important and worthy of discussing. Perhaps it's casting news, a contract detail, a set image, or something else that's more on the minor side, but is still definitely worth talking about. This is a time and place for all of us unabashed nerds to come together and talk about the things that we love so much in the movie-sphere. So, without further ado, let's get started with this week installment of Nerd Round-Up.

It is being reported that Mission: Impossible III and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes actor Keri Russell is in talks for an undisclosed role in Star Wars Episode IX. All that is known is that the role Russell is up for will involve a lot of action. Russell is a terrific actor, and she only adds to every movie she is in. Assuming the talks go through, having her join Episode IX is a major win. The question isn't so much will Russell be good in the movie; it's whether her character will be used effectively. While I liked Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, there were some heavy hitter actors in it whose characters I found to be underwhelming, such as with Benicio Del Toro and Laura Dern. They are excellent performers, but their characters weren't the strongest and it was disappointing to see. So will Russell's character follow suit, or will she actually be a really nice addition to the Star Wars mythology? I'm really hoping for the latter. We all know Keri Russell can add a lot to Episode IX, so let's wait and see if the character she plays can do the same.

While most people expected the third John Wick movie to be titled John Wick: Chapter Three, star Keanu Reeves has revealed that that is not necessarily the case. The third installment in the franchise will actually be titled John Wick: Parabellum, which comes from the phrase "Si vis pacem, para bellum", or "If you want peace, prepare for war". I don't like the idea of John Wick 3 being titled anything other than Chapter Three. They already established the trend with Chapter Two, and deviating from it seems strange. What the title of the film is has nothing to do with the quality of the actual movie, but it just feels weird to go from Chapter Two to some other subtitle. And, honestly, I think "Prepare for War" would have been a better subtitle than "Parabellum", as most people don't have any idea what the fuck "Parabellum" means. Now, maybe the phrase plays an important role in the film and, in retrospect, it will only feel natural that this one be called Parabellum. But, right now, it's disappointing that they established a trend with their titles and now they're abandoning it.

We now have official confirmation that Idris Elba will be playing the villain in the Dwayne Johnson/Jason Statham-led Fast and Furious spin-off film, Hobbs and Shaw. This is excellent news. Idris Elba is a fantastic actor, and he is really good at playing a villain. We certainly saw that in 2016's Star Trek Beyond. Here, in a Fast and Furious movie, I think he will especially shine. He has a physicality to him where you can believe that he could take on Jason Statham and the Rock. Now, we've seen Fast and Furious movies have great actors play their villains, and the villains aren't effectively used. This was true of Furious 6 with Luke Evans and The Fate of the Furious with Charlize Theron. But I do think it will be different with Elba in Hobbs and Shaw. While he may not be in Fast and Furious 9 (you can read more about that here), Dwayne Johnson is working hard on getting this spin-off right, and part of that is having an effective villain and a great actor to play the role, and they now have Idris Elba on their team.
