How to Train Your Dragon 2 SPOILER-FREE REVIEW

I'll be honest, I never saw the first How to Train Your Dragon and I didn't have much interest in seeing this one. Then, circumstances worked out and I saw this film. As a result, I really want to see the first one now. How to Train Your Dragon 2 stars the recognizable voices of Jay BaruchelCate Blanchett, Jonah Hill, Kristen Wiig, and Gerard Butler

The main character, Hiccup (Baruchel) is a dragon rider who is the son of the Chief (Butler). The Chief chooses Hiccup to become the new chief and throughout the movie, Hiccup struggles with this. He believes he cannot be as good and as strong a leader as his father, and doesn't exactly see how he could take on such a responisbility. But with the discovery of his long-thought-to-be-dead mother (not a spoiler, it's in the trailers) Valka (Blanchett) and fighting off the villainous dragon trapper Drago, Hiccup soon learns that he doesn't exactly need to be the leader his father is but he can be a great leader on his own.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 is a great film for kids. It's got dragons, fire, swords and everything you love about Lord of the Rings in a PG film. This movie is great for adults. It has some darker tones with the development of the movie's villain. The reunion of Valka and the Chief is a well-done moment that had me engaged. The animation for this movie is spectacular as well. One of the hardest things to do with an animated movie is to not only make a movie that kids can enjoy, but to also make a great movie that can be enjoyed by all, and How to Train Your Dragon 2 accomplishes this.
