Weekly Box Office Round-Up: Apes. Still. Strong.

This week, the big new releases were Sex Tape, The Purge: Anarchy and Planes: Fire & Rescue. Let's take a look at this week's box office:

#1 Dawn of the Planet of the Apes- $36,254,310

On its second week, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (read our review here) has taken first place again. Even though its been dominating the box office, it still hasn't broken even. It'll will have to take in a lot more to break even and hopefully the good reviews will let it have legs at the box office.

#2 The Purge: Anarchy- $29,816,675

On its first week at the box office, The Purge: Anarchy came not too far behind Dawn. For a very low budget movie, it sure turned up a good opening week in take. What will be interesting is how it fares these next few weeks as bigger films open, yet not many films of its genre. Perhaps its uniqueness will help it as bigger summer movies begin to open.

#3 Planes: Fire & Rescue- $17,509,407

For an animated movie, Planes: Rescue & Fire didn't do very well, pulling in only around $17 million. Compare this to some of the opening weekends of other animated films of the year (The Lego Movie- $69 million, How to Train Your Dragon 2- $49 million, Rio 2- $39 million) and Planes did not do well at all. It might have legs since there aren't many animated films coming soon in theaters but it looks as if Planes will slip out of sight from our top 5 list in the next coming weeks.

#4 Sex Tape- $14,608,152

Before, people used to say that R-rated comedies didn't make any money. This was disproved with the massive success of the 21 Jump Street franchise (the second one made $57 million opening weekend) and Neighbors ($49 million). However, Sex Tape won't be joining the kings of the R-rated comedies earning a disappointing $14 million average. Who knows. Perhaps people are tired of seeing sex in movies... yeah, right. Let's see how it does these next few weeks.

#5 Transformers: Age of Extinction- $9,845,720

Transformers: Age of Extinction had a strong opening weekend and is currently the highest grossing movie of the year, yet a combination of terrible reviews and disappointed fans, Transformers has slowly over the past four weeks slipped further down the top 5. My guess is that it won't be on the top 5 at all next week.

To wrap up the box office for this weekend #1 was Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, #2 was The Purge: Anarchy, #3 was Planes: Fire & Rescue, #4 was Sex Tape and #5 was Transformers: Age of Extinction. Next week, Hercules, Lucy and The Fluffy Movie are the major releases. I think Hercules will take the lead with Dawn in second and Lucy in third.

What do you think? Did you like the results for this past week? What do you think will happen next week? Leave your thoughts in the comments section.
