First Image from Southpaw- Is Jake Gyllenhaal the next Christian Bale?
The quintessential definition of an actor is a person who can fully embody a character. Whether that character is a historical figure, an animal or an average person, a good actor can make you believe that they are that character, but a great actor can lose themselves entirely in the role. For the longest time, Christian Bale has been the poster child of this method. In 2004, he made The Machinist, where he got down to 110 pounds. The next year he had to go up to 250 pounds for Batman Begins. Since then, Bale has proven that he can change his body to fit whatever the movie requires. If he needs to be the pinnacle of human athletics (Batman) or if he is the skinniest man you have ever seen (The Machinist), he will rise to the occasion.
Jake Gyllenhaal, it seems, has become the next Christian Bale. For years he has been an actor I've had significant interest in. But hasn't been until of late that I've really been able to see Gyllenhaal for the remarkable actor he truly is. This year saw the release of Nightcrawler (read our review here) where he isolated himself from his friends for months. He ran 10 miles every day in order to get down to such a small, scrawny scale. He transformed himself for the role.

However, it wasn't just a one-time thing. The first images of Gyllenhaal in Southpaw has arrived. In the film, directed by Antoine Fuqua, Billy "The Great" Hope is a boxer who must redeem himself in the ring after a personal tragedy. Seems like a fantastic dramatic role for Gyllenhaal but, as a great actor would, he gained 15 pounds in muscle and went from the above picture to this:

This just goes to show the dedication Gyllenhaal has to his practice and exactly why he could be the next Christian Bale.
What do you think? Do you like Jake Gyllenhaal? Do you like the looks of him in Southpaw? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.
