Weekly Box Office Round-Up: To Dumb Too Kount
This past weekend, Dumb and Dumber To and Beyond the Lights opened in theaters. Let's take a look at this past week's box office.
#1 Dumb and Dumber To- $36,111,775
On its opening weekend, Dumb and Dumber To came in first place. Despite it coming out twenty years after the original, it has a massive fan presence and a lot of people were looking forward to this movie. While the reviews have been rather poor, there was little doubt in my mind that it would make a good amount of money, and it is off to a good start.
#2 Big Hero 6- $34,662,707
On its second week, Big Hero 6 came in second place. Last week, the Disney film actually took first place ahead of Interstellar, something no one saw coming. The film has proceeded to make a good amount of money. Recently, the animated features haven't been doing very well at the box office, between The Box Trolls and The Book of Life, however Big Hero 6 has disproved that. I think it's going to stick around for a while in the top 5 list.
#3 Interstellar- $28,307,626
On its second week, Interstellar came in third place. Last week, it came in second place, which no one expected. The movie has been getting mixed reviews and while it hasn't been doing what everyone thought it would at the domestic box office, it's been killing it overseas. You can read our review for the film here.
#4 Beyond the Lights- $6,200,284
On its opening weekend, Beyond the Lights came in fourth place. I don't think many expected this film to make a lot of money. On a budget of $7 million, its almost made back its money at the domestic box office. I'm sure it will make a good amount of money, being that it is low budget, but I doubt it will be, in any way, a big hit.
#5 Gone Girl- $4,561,432
On its seventh week, Gone Girl came in fifth place. After seven weeks, the film is still hanging in there. The movie has made a lot of money: making over $152 million domestically and $318 million world wide. However, I think this is its last week in the top 5. No one can say it hasn't had a good run, though. You can read our review here.
To re-cap, #1 was Dumb and Dumber To, #2 was Big Hero 6, #3 was Interstellar, #4 was Beyond the Lights and #5 was Gone Girl.
Next week, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 opens and I think it will take top spot at the box office.
