Weekly Box Office Round-Up: Mockingjay Wins Again
This weekend didn't really see the opening of many films. The Pyramid opened, but that just barely cracked the top 10. However, this is the top 5. Let's take a look at this past week's box office.
#1 The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 1- $22,026,762
On its third week, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 1 came in first place. The film has been killing it at the box office. Already it's the fourth highest grossing film of the year domestically and is on its way to being one of the highest world wide. The movie's going to stick around for another several weeks but will have some major competition in two weeks when The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies comes out.
#2 Penguins of Madagascar- $10,907,030
On its second week, Penguins of Madagascar came in second place. The animated film has been doing well as counter-programming for a dramatic-heavy Oscar season. So far it's almost brought in $50 million domestically. I think it'll have a presence for a couple more weeks but it's going to back off as some of the bigger releases come out.
#3 Horrible Bosses 2- $8,421,307
On its second week, Horrible Bosses 2 came in third place. The film has been getting mixed reviews and hasn't been doing fantastic at the box office. It will likely make some money for a little bit until Christmas, when The Interview comes along and steals all it's R-rated comedy fans.
#4 Big Hero 6- $8,042,918
On its fifth week, Big Hero 6 came in fourth place. The release of Penguins no doubt took a lot of the fans going to see this film, but it's still hanging in there. The movie has made some good money. However, it will likely drift off the top 5 in the next week or so.
#5 Interstellar- $7,788,357
On its fifth week, Interstellar came in fifth place. While the film hasn't been making the money Warner Bros. hoped it would, it still has been making good money. Domestically, it's made close to $160 million and has been doing fantastic overseas. However, I think this is its last week in the top 5. You can read our review for Interstellar here.
Next week, Exodus: Gods and Kings is released, as well as Top 5. I think either Exodus or Mockingjay will take top spot with the other in second and Top 5 in third place.
