Weekly Box Office Round-Up: American Sniper Shoots Down the Rest

This week, Mortdecai, The Boy Next Door and Strange Magic all opened in theaters. Let's take a look at this past week's box office.

#1 American Sniper- $64,628,304

On its second week of wide release, American Sniper came in first place. This film has been killing it. It has broken January records and is making money that is usual of a summer movie. The attraction to this film is incredible. With nothing huge coming out for another few weeks, I think American Sniper is going to stay on top for a while longer. You can read our review for the film here

#2 The Boy Next Door- $14,910,105

On its opening weekend, The Boy Next Door came in second place. Just dollars behind American Sniper it... no, wait. I read it wrong. There's about a $50 million dollar gap between first and second place this weeks. My bad. Look, let's be honest. The only reason people went to go see it was because of Jennifer Lopez. No one went to see The Boy Next Door to see a captivating suspense thriller. This film has been getting nothing but terrible reviews. Everyone who wanted to waste their money did this week and then I think it's gone. If it's not off the top 5 list next week, it will be significantly lower on it.

#3 Paddington- $12,266,287

On its second week, Paddington came in third place. This week, Strange Magic (an animated kids film) came out, but was terribly defeated, probably by Paddington. The latter has been getting rave reviews while the former has been getting really bad ones. So it seems families steered clear of Strange Magic and went to go see Paddington instead.

#4 The Wedding Ringer- $11,309,381

On its second week, The Wedding Ringer came in fourth place. The R-rated comedy has been doing decent to earn back its budget, with a big cast including the hottest comedy star right now, Kevin Hart. While the film hasn't been getting solid reviews, people have been liking it enough for it to make a profit. We'll have to wait and see how it fares the next little while.

#5 Tak3n- $7,412,597

On its third week, Tak3n came in fifth place. The action film has been doing well to make a profit, being that it has actions star Liam Neeson and is the third installment in a recognizable franchise. The large opening it had has warranted talks of a potential fourth film, but while it did have a sizable opening, it has been doing little to have legs at the box office. We'll see by the end whether its total box office draw leads to a fourth film.

Mortdecai and Strange Magic also opened this weekend, with the former in ninth place at around $4 million and the latter in seventh place at around $5 million.

Next week, the found-footage sci fi film Project Almanac and the romantic murder thriller The Loft opens in theaters. I think American Sniper will take it again with Project Almanac in either second or third place.
