Weekly Box Office Round-Up: One Ring to Bring Them All and in the Darkness Bind Them

This is the first Weekly Box Office Round-Up of the new year! This week, The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death opened in theaters. Let's take a look at this past week's box office.

#1 The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies- $21,910,000

On its third week, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies came in first place. This film has been making a lot of money at the box office, this being its third consecutive week as number one. It has already made close to $700 million worldwide, so I think there's little doubt the movie will cross the prestigious (yes, even for Transformers) mark of $1 billion dollars. Read our review of the film here.

#2 Into the Woods- $19,066,000

On its second week, Into the Woods came in second place. Last week, the film was overtaken by Unbroken, however it seems this week the tides have turned. The musical has been doing fairly well, making over $90 million at the domestic box office so far. I think it's going to stay for while for the next little while, considering how slow a month January is.

#3 Unbroken- $18,358,000

On its second week, Unbroken came in third place. Like I said earlier, this movie was in second place last week but has now been demoted by Into the Woods. It seems as if the poor critical reviews and the mixed fan ratings have finally caught up to the film, as it is slowing down. I think it'll be off the top 5 list in a couple more weeks, but we'll have to wait and see.

#4 The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death- $15,145,000

On its opening weekend, The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death came in fourth place. I'm honestly surprised this movie made the top 5. January is usually the time of year that all the really bad horror films (and regular films) come out. This was also a sequel to a poor film which starred Daniel Radcliffe, and he didn't even return. Everything pointed to this film being bad. I would not be surprised if this film isn't on the top 5 next week (in fact, I'm kind of betting on it). I guess we'll find out next week.

#5 Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb- $14,450,000

On its third week, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb came in fifth place. This film hasn't been doing well at the box office to make back its $127 million dollar budget. It is probably best that this is the last film in the franchise, as it seems to have lost all its steam. I'm sure it will be out of the top 5 by next week.

To re-cap, #1 was The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, #2 was Into the Woods, #3 was Unbroken, #4 was The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death and #5 was Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb.

Next week, Taken 3, Predestination and Selma and Inherent Vice get wide releases. I think The Hobbit will take #1 with Into the Woods at #2 and Taken 3 at #3.
