Weekly Box Office Round-Up: I'm Running Out of Titles for American Sniper

This weekend, Project Almanac, The Loft and Black or White opened in theaters. Let's take a look at this past week's box office.

#1 American Sniper- $31,850,000

On its third week of wide release, American Sniper came in first place. This is the third week in a row that the film has been number one. Not only has it shattered previous January records, but it is also the highest grossing movie during a Super Bowl weekend, previously held by the Hannah Montana movie. This movie is just killing it and I think it'll be around for a while longer. You can read our review here.

#2 Paddington- $8,505,000

On its third week, Paddington came in second place. This film has been hovering between the second and third spot the past few weeks, but has been doing very well for a January movie. Being the only (good) animated kids film out now, it's been getting a lot of attention. I'm sure it will stick around for a while more.

#3 Project Almanac- $8,500,000

On its opening weekend, Project Almanac came in third place. This was a movie that I've been looking forward to since it's first trailer. But it kept getting delayed and the name kept changing, making it hard to me to know exactly when it was coming out. I think this film could have made a lot more money if they had marketed it better. A lot of films shift release dates, but the studio did little to make its new date more aware and I'm sure the name change didn't help much either. Hopefully it can break even and maybe make a bit of a profit too.

#4 Black or White- $6,456,000

On its opening weekend, Black or White came in fourth place. I have seen very little marketing for this film at all, which is why I was surprised when it turned up on the top 5 list. The Kevin Costner film may have an interesting subject matter (which is probably why it made the money it did), but the poor reviews give little faith that it follows through in that department. I don't think this is going to be a big money maker and will probably drop off the top 5 by next week.

#5 The Boy Next Door- $6,093,000

On its second week, The Boy Next Door came in fifth place. The only reason people are going to see this movie is because of Jennifer Lopez. It just is. It made the bulk of its money in its opening weekend, then the few people who wanted to see it but didn't get a chance went this week. By next week, I honestly think it will be off the top 5. Hey, maybe it'll surprise us all. Who knows?

The Loft also opened this weekend and came in tenth place, making roughly $2.8 million.

Next week, the Wachowski Siblings sci fi epic Jupiter Ascending opens, as well as the animated film The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water and the sword and magic film Seventh Son. I think American Sniper will be #1 again next week with Jupiter Ascending in second.
