Weekly Box Office Round-Up: We Get It, Furious 7 Is Making Money
This weekend, The Age of Adeline and The Water Diviner opened in theaters, as well as Ex Machina went into wide-release. Let's take a look at this past weekend's box office.
#1 Furious 7- $18,259,000
In its fourth week, Furious 7 came in first place. This is so far the most successful film of 2015, having crossed the $1 billion dollar mark last week (read about that here). However, it's reign is over come next week when (one of) the biggest movie of the year opens in Avengers: Age of Ultron. However, it will most likely stick strong in second place for another week or so. You can read our review of Furious 7 here.
#2 Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2- $15,500,000
In its second week, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 came in second place. This movie hasn't been making the numbers the original did, but it is still a decent film for Kevin James, at least financially. In regards to the reception of the movie, most people don't like it. I believe it has a 4% critic approval on Rotten Tomatoes, which is one of the lowest ratings I have seen. I really like James, but this movie just looks so bad. This one to avoid.
#3 The Age of Adaline- $13,375,000
On its opening weekend, The Age of Adaline came in third place. I feel bad for the one person who thought they were going to see Avengers: Age of Ultron a week early but instead saw this, but if there is a person that stupid out there, then it's their own fault. I'm surprised this movie was as high on this list as it was, for being such a small film. But maybe the star power and that possible confusion helped get it to third place.
#4 Home- $8,300,000
In its fifth week, Home came in fourth place. This movie has made so much more money than people expected it to. It has stayed in the top 5 for five consecutive weeks (reaching Kingsman levels) and has made a lot of money, over $150 million domestically. But with so many more big films coming out in the next few weeks, the top 5 is going to be dramatically changed up, and Home will probably be one of the first to go.
#5 Unfriended- $6,244,000
In its second week, Unfriended came in fifth place. The horror film hasn't been making record-breaking amounts of money, but for a low budget film, it has done okay for itself. Our other writer, Rob, saw the film and he thought it was decent but nothing great. He will most likely be doing a review of it in the next couple days. But come next week, Unfriended will most likely be off the top 5 list.
To re-cap, #1 was Furious 7, #2 was Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, #3 was The Age of Adaline, #4 was Home and #5 was Unfriended.
Next week, Avengers: Age of Ultron opens, which has a good shot of cracking the top 5. Hopefully it can do well for itself. Here's hoping for fifth spot!
