The Movie Paradise Nerd Round-Up: June 6th

In this new editorial series, I will be doing a weekly collection of all things nerdy. Some of the article will be a wrap-up of some movie news, perhaps casting rumors or images; stuff that doesn't necessarily warrant an entire article but are still important. Then the rest will be different geek culture items, such as memes or videos. I will try my best to post these every Saturday. So let's get our hands nerdy (okay, that was terrible) and check out the geek picks of this week.

The News

It's being rumored that actress Tilda Swinton will portray the Ancient One in 2016's Doctor Strange, which already has Benedict Cumberbatch cast as the titular doctor. What makes this interesting is that the Ancient One is usually Asian and a man in the comics, and Swinton is neither. I'm completely fine the gender switch, as Swinton could playing this character very well, but I just wish they kept the ethnicity of the Ancient One. There aren't a lot of Asian characters in Marvel Comics, and this is one that could have been utilized. But Swinton will undoubtedly give us a really good performance, and I'm excited to see it.

It's also being reported that Chris Pine may play Steve Trevor, the love interest of the Wonder Woman (played by Gal Gadot) in her solo film, set for a 2017 release. I don't know much about the actual character, but I really like Pine as an actor. He's great in the rebooted Star Trek films, which is why a lot of people actually wanted him to be the new Hal Jordan/Green Lantern. I actually hope they go with a John Stewart (who is black) for Green Lantern, so having Pine play Trevor is a good idea. I honestly don't care who he plays; I just want him involved in the world of comic book movies.

The sequel to last year's Guardians of the Galaxy is set for a 2017 release, and now writer/director James Gunn has finished the first draft of the script. He released the above picture, which doesn't reveal what the title will be, saving that tidbit for a later date. I am really excited for this sequel and I think there's a lot of opportunities for this film, and a lot of new roads and directions it can take. Gunn did a brilliant job with the original and I'm very excited to see where this one goes.
