DC- Chris McKay Helming a Nightwing Movie; Matt Reeves Confirmed for The Batman
The Batman has been a mess ever since Ben Affleck left as the director. After that news broke, it looked like Matt Reeves was the front-runner to replace him, but it wasn't a sure thing. While Reeves was DC's first pick, Don't Breathe's Fede Alvarez and Ridley Scott were also lined up to potentially take over. But it seemed like it was pretty solid that Reeves would end up replacing Affleck. However, out of the blue, we heard just a few days ago that negotiations between Reeves and DC had broken down, reportedly because talks had become heated. You can read our full coverage on it in last week's addition of Nerd Round-Up, which you can see here. I was really fed up, because it seems like every couple days we hear something new about what's going on behind the scenes with not just The Batman, but DC as a whole. While I was sad to see Reeves go, I was so done with The Batman and DC at that point that I didn't really care. Now, some more news has dropped concerning The Batman and the larger DC Universe that really has my head spinning.
Warner Bros. has confirmed that Reeves will in fact direct The Batman, and it's a done deal. But that's not the only thing. According to the Hollywood Reporter, The LEGO Batman Movie director Chris McKay will be helming a Nightwing solo film.
Let me start with Matt Reeves directing The Batman. I think Reeves is a fantastic director, and I was always on board for him doing the film. I just don't know what the f*ck is going on anymore. First he's doing it, then he's not, and then just days later he is again! This movie is so over the place that I don't even know what to think anymore. I read the news that Reeves had signed on, and I didn't feel anything. Just a couple months ago, I could hardly contain my excitement for The Batman, and now I don't feel anything when I hear news about it. It's really sad, actually. I mean, it's f*cking Batman! He's arguably the greatest superhero of all time. And a new movie is coming out for him and I could care less. That's what DC has done to this movie. They have f*cked it over so many times in such a short period of time that I just don't care anymore. Of course, I will be the first to watch the trailer, and I will be there opening weekend to see the film, but I'm not excited for it anymore. I'm willing to bet this movie doesn't even happen. I don't think the DC Cinematic Universe is going to make it to 2019, when The Batman is supposed to come out. With everything that's been going on, I'm thinking there is a strong possibility that the universe is canned by then.
Now, onto the more shocking news. The LEGO Batman Movie director Chris McKay will be doing a Nightwing movie. On the positive side, I loved LEGO Batman. It was fresh, original, and funny as hell! You can read our full review of it here. So I'm glad to see that McKay is making the transition to live action. That's the positive here. The negative... holy f*cking sh*t! Stop announcing goddamn movies! The last few months have been nothing but DC just announcing movie after movie without offering any kind of assurance that they'll be able to follow through on these projects. Just to get a full understanding, DC has announced, at one point or another, that they're doing Man of Steel 2, The Flash, Cyborg, Green Lantern Corp., Gotham City Sirens, Suicide Squad 2, Black Adam, Shazam, Justice League 2, The Batman, and now Nightwing. They have not delivered nearly enough to warrant all of this, and they keep adding more movies every month! We don't need Nightwing! We need Man of Steel 2 and The Flash far before we need a Nightwing movie! They can't even figure out Batman, and they're trying to do Nightwing? I'm so done. I am just so f*cking done. I don't think the DC Cinematic Universe is going to last. I don't know how it can sustain itself. Not too long ago, I wrote an editorial asking whether the DC Cinematic Universe was f*cked. There, I go into full detail about how DC can save itself, which you can read here. So I'm not going to repeat myself. All I will say, though, is that if DC doesn't do something quick, this current incarnation of their cinematic universe will be over.
What do you think? Are you glad that Matt Reeves is directing The Batman? Are you happy to hear that a Nightwing movie is in development? Do you even care anymore? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.
