The Fate of the Furious Crosses $1 Billion Worldwide
I enjoyed the latest installment in the Fast and Furious franchise, The Fate of the Furious. I didn't think it was as good as Fast Five or Furious 7, but I did get a kick out of it for what it was. It definitely delivered on the insane stunts and crazy action sequences that the other movies gave us; it just felt a little emotionally hollow to me. You can read our full review here. But even if you aren't the biggest fan of the series, you at least recognize that it's incredibly commercially successful. The Fast and Furious franchise has become a billion dollar franchise, which is insane to think about. Furious 7 made $1.5 billion dollars at the worldwide box office, making it the sixth highest grossing film of all time. Now, I never expected The Fate of the Furious to reach those numbers. Furious 7 was coming off of the recent passing of Paul Walker, and that definitely boosted the box office, among other reasons. But this is a hot property, and The Fate of the Furious was definitely going to crack a billion dollars. I had no doubts about that. And now, in its third week at the box office, The Fate of the Furious has officially joined the billion dollar club, making it the 30th film in history to do so. The Fate of the Furious currently stands as the second highest grossing film of the year, just behind Beauty and the Beast.
I think The Fate of the Furious will surpass Beauty and the Beast. If I had to guess, I think The Fate of the Furious will end up around $1.2 or $1.3 billion total. It won't be as high as Furious 7, but it will certainly come close. This news is all the more reason why we're getting the Dwayne Johnson/Jason Statham spin-off film (which you can read about here). This series is incredibly profitable, and there seems to be no end in sight. Unlike properties like Transformers or Pirates of the Caribbean, I think Fast and Furious is deserving of these numbers. Not every film in the series is as good as Fast Five, but they do have a handle on the franchise enough for me to be happy for its success. Looking to the rest of 2017, we did a major breakdown of the other films coming out that will probably cross a billion when Beauty and the Beast hit the milestone. You can read that breakdown here. But the next one to cross a billion will be Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. It comes out next weekend in the United States, and it has already grossed over $100 million in overseas markets. It is going to absolutely crush next weekend, and I have no doubts it will join the billion dollar club as well. The first film, being a complete unknown property, made $773 million dollars worldwide. Now that everyone knows and loves the Guardians, and it is getting pretty good reviews, I think Vol. 2 will have no problems crossing that billion dollar mark.
What do you think? Are you surprised that The Fate of the Furious crossed a billion dollars at the worldwide box office? Did you like the film? What other 2017 movies do you think will join the billion dollar club as well? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.
