The Movie Paradise Nerd Round-Up: May 27th

Welcome to this week's The Movie Paradise Nerd Round-Up. Essentially what we do here is we take a look at all things nerdy. We break down everything in the world of nerdom, ranging from superheroes to Star Wars and every other geeky thing in between, and analyse the smaller bits of news that weren't big enough stories to necessarily warrant an entire article, but are still significant and important. Perhaps it's casting news, a contract detail, a set image, or something else that's more on the minor side, but is definitely worth checking out. Then we have a little bit of fun with some movie-related videos and clips. It's a time and place for all of us unabashed nerds to come together and talk about the things that we love so much. So, without further ado, let's get started with this week's Nerd Round-Up.

The News

It was just announced the other day that Tom Hardy would be starring in Sony's Venom (you can read more about that here), which will be the first in a proposed cinematic universe of Spider-Man characters that excludes Spider-Man. When Venom was first announced, a Black Cat/Silver Sable movie was announced as well. So with Hardy being cast as Venom, it would only make sense that we would soon learn more information about this Black Cat/Silver Sable film. It has been revealed that the official title for the movie is Silver and Black, and it will be helmed by The Secret Life of Bees director Gina Prince-Bythewood. I haven't seen any of Prince-Bythewood's work, so I can't really comment on her as a director. However, I do like that they went out and got a female director for a project like this. I think that is important. But Silver and Black is a stupid title. No one is going to know what the hell it's in reference to. The casting of Tom Hardy is what sold me on Venom, and even before that I thought that it had the potential to be a cool film. I never thought there was anything you could do with a Black Cat/Silver Sable movie. So I probably won't be on board with this film until I fiund out the basic plot, and who will be playing Black Cat and Silver Sable.

In a recent interview, The New Mutants director Josh Boone stated that the film will be a "full-fledged horror movie". It is also being reported that Rosario Dawson and 13 Reasons Why actor Henry Zaga are in talks to join already announced cast members Anya Taylor-Joy and Maisie Williams. First of all, I never read any of the New Mutants comic books, so hearing that it will be a horror movie completely took me by surprise. So, with no real knowledge of the source material, all I can say about it is that I'm glad that Fox is continuing to diversify their kinds of superhero properties. Deadpool was an R-rated comedy. Logan was an R-rated Western noir. Hearing that New Mutants will be a horror film shows that Fox is following the same pattern of giving us game-changing, radically different comic book films. As for Rosario Dawson and Henry Zaga potentially joining, I'm split. Dawson is fantastic, and I want her in as much stuff as possible. So her joining New Mutants would be awesome. I'm not sure about Zaga as an actor yet. He had such a minimal role in 13 Reasons Why, that it's hard to gauge his acting capabilities, so I don't know yet how to feel about him potentially joining. Overall, this is good news for The New Mutants, and I'm getting really excited to see it next year.

It has been confirmed that The Strain actor, Jack Kesy, has joined Deadpool 2 in order to play the movie's villain. However, it's not known exactly which character from the comics Kesy will be playing. I watched the first couple seasons of The Strain, and from what I watched Kesy was great in it! He was definitely creepy and haunting, and depending upon who he ends up playing in Deadpool 2, he could definitely bring a lot of those same elements to the role. The cast for Deadpool 2 is really shaping up to be great. Deadpool already had a strong ensemble, but the sequel is seemingly topping it. Instead of going out and getting huge name actors (Josh Brolin aside), Deadpool 2 is focusing on getting quality actors. Not many people know who Zazie Beetz or Jack Kesy are, but they're talented actors who are being brought into the movie. On Fox's part, I think that is a really smart decision. You have the brand name of Deadpool now. You have the star power of Ryan Reynolds. You don't need some huge A-list actor to come in for the villain. You can take a chance on a smaller, lesser known name, and I think it will end up paying off in the long run.
